How to Stay Safe on ThisRomance and Report Issues Fast

ThisRomance Safety Guide: What to Do When Things Go Wrong

Something feels off in a conversation. A profile doesn't quite add up. Someone is pushing in a direction that makes you uncomfortable. What do you do?

On ThisRomance, you have tools for exactly that moment, and knowing them before you need them makes all the difference. This guide covers what we've built to keep the platform trustworthy, what signals are worth paying attention to, and how to act quickly when something goes wrong.

What We've Built So You Don't Have to Worry Constantly

Before getting into what to do when something goes wrong, it's worth knowing what's already running in the background.

  • Photo moderation. Every photo uploaded publicly on ThisRomance goes through an automated AI review before it appears. Content that violates our community guidelines doesn't get published. If a photo is removed and you think that was wrong, you can submit an appeal through your account settings.

  • Identity verification. On ThisRomance, we offer a voluntary identity verification program run through a credible third-party provider. Members who complete it receive a badge on their profile. It confirms who they are, not how they'll behave, but it does raise the floor of what you can assume about a profile. Our automated systems also run independent age checks: if signals suggest a user may be under 18, age verification is required regardless of whether they chose to verify.

  • Community standards enforcement. Our ThisRomance Trust and Safety team reviews every report submitted by members. When a violation is confirmed, action is taken in line with our Terms of Service. The outcome range goes from a warning to a temporary restriction to a permanent removal, depending on the severity, and in serious cases involving illegal content, we report to law enforcement.

Search engine privacy. Your ThisRomance profile is not indexed by search engines. What you do on our platform stays off public search.

None of this on ThisRomance requires you to do anything. It runs on ThisRomance whether you think about it or not.

Recognizing When Something Feels Off

Most interactions on ThisRomance are what they appear to be. But it helps to know the patterns worth noticing.

A few signals that deserve a second look:

  • A profile with very few details, unusually generic photos, or information that seems inconsistent across different parts of the profile

  • Someone who pushes quickly to move the conversation off the platform to email, WhatsApp, or another app, especially before much of a connection has formed

  • Requests for money, gift cards, or financial help, regardless of the story attached

  • Pressure to act quickly, make a decision, or share personal information before you're comfortable

  • Anything that makes you feel uneasy, even if you can't explain exactly why

None of this turns every conversation into a risk assessment. It’s just about knowing what to notice and trusting yourself when something keeps nagging at you.

How to Report on ThisRomance

Reporting on ThisRomance is built into the platform, so you never have to go looking for a special form or support page. The option to report is always right where you need it.

What you can report:

  • A full profile (for account-level concerns like suspected impersonation or harmful intent)

  • A specific profile photo

  • Any message in a private conversation

  • Any post or content in the newsfeed

Where to report from:

  • From a profile page, using the report option on the profile

  • From inside a private conversation, using the report option on the message

  • From the newsfeed, using the report option on the post

What happens after you report:

Our Trust and Safety team picks up the case and begins reviewing it. If a violation is confirmed, action is taken. You receive an email notification once the case is resolved. The person you reported is never told who submitted the report.

Reporting doesn't require you to be certain. If something feels wrong, that's reason enough to report it. A report that turns out to be nothing costs you nothing, and one that catches a problem helps everyone else on the platform.

How to Block Someone on ThisRomance

On ThisRomance, blocking is separate from reporting, and you don't need to do one before the other. They work independently.

When you block someone on ThisRomance:

  • They're removed from your messages and feed immediately

  • They can no longer contact you

  • They can no longer see your profile or any of your content

  • The block takes effect right away, with no review period

You can block from a profile page or from inside a conversation. You don't need to provide a reason, and you don't need to report the person first. If a conversation isn't working for you, blocking is the right tool.

Protecting Your Personal Information

A simple habit worth keeping: don't put personal contact details in your profile or share them early in a conversation. Home addresses, workplaces, phone numbers, last names: none of these belong in your ThisRomance bio, and it's worth waiting until you've built some trust before sharing them in a private exchange. This isn't about distrust toward other members. It's the same basic caution that applies in any situation where you're getting to know someone new.

The ThisRomance blur toggle in chats and mail is another tool worth knowing about. It lets you control whether potentially sensitive incoming content appears by default or stays hidden until you choose to look. You set this in your account settings.

General email notifications from ThisRomance can also be switched off in settings. Security-related emails, anything tied to your account's safety, always come through regardless of what you've toggled off.

If You Think You've Encountered a Scam

Romance scams are a documented pattern across online platforms. The tactic usually involves building trust quickly, then introducing a financial need or emergency.

According to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center, Americans reported losing $329 million to romance scams in 2024, a 19% increase from the previous year. One common pattern in those cases is a quick move off the original platform, which removes the safety infrastructure the platform provides.

If you think you're dealing with a scam attempt on ThisRomance:

  • Don't send money or gift cards, under any circumstances

  • Don't share financial account information

  • Report the profile using the reporting tool

  • Block the person

If you've already shared financial information or sent money, contacting your bank or financial institution directly is the fastest next step. Many banks have dedicated fraud teams available around the clock for exactly this kind of situation.

Getting to Know the Full Platform

Safety tools work best when you know what's available. For a complete overview of how ThisRomance works, including features, privacy controls, and account settings, the ThisRomance features guide covers everything in one place.

The Bigger Picture

We want ThisRomance to be a place where conversations can happen without members having to spend their energy on suspicion. We built the safety infrastructure so the platform can do what it’s supposed to do: help people connect.

But we're also honest about the limits. No system catches everything, and no platform can confirm that every member has good intentions. What we can do is build the tools, keep them working, and make it as easy as possible for you to use them when you need to.

Report fast on ThisRomance. Block without hesitation. Trust your instincts when something feels off, and reach out to our support team if you need a hand with anything the tools don't cover. The rest, we'll handle.
